If you’re looking for a way to connect with your Hindu faith from the comfort of your own home, performing havan (fire ritual) is an excellent option. However, not everyone has access to a panditji (priest) who can perform the ritual with them. In this article, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide on how to perform havan at home without a panditji.
Before we get started, it’s important to note that performing havan requires careful preparation and attention to detail. While it may seem like a daunting task for those who are new to the ritual, with a little guidance and practice, anyone can perform havan safely and effectively.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
To perform havan at home, you’ll need a few basic supplies. These include:
- A small clay pot or bowl for the fire
- Dry cow dung or wood chips for fuel
- Ghee (clarified butter)
- Rice flour or wheat flour for the offerings
- Milk, water, and flowers to offer to the deities
- A shawl or scarf to cover yourself while performing the ritual
Step 2: Choose Your Deity
There are several different deities that can be honored during havan. The most common ones include Agni (the god of fire), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). Depending on your personal preference, you may choose to honor one or multiple deities during your ritual.
Step 3: Set Up the Fire
To set up the fire for havan, start by filling your clay pot or bowl with dry cow dung or wood chips. You’ll also need a small amount of ghee to get the fire started. Place the pot on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area and pour enough ghee into the pot to cover the bottom of the pot. Once the ghee has melted, add a small amount of dry cow dung or wood chips to the pot and stir gently until the fire starts.
Step 4: Prepare Your Offerings
Once your fire is burning, it’s time to prepare your offerings. Mix rice flour or wheat flour with milk, water, and flowers in a small bowl. You can also add other items such as nuts, grains, or fruits to the bowl. Stir the mixture gently and set it aside.
Step 5: Perform the Ritual
Now that everything is ready, it’s time to perform the ritual. Begin by standing in front of the fire, facing east. You can use a shawl or scarf to cover yourself while performing the ritual. Take a deep breath and close your eyes. Next, repeat the following mantra three times:
"Om hreng kreeng saadhna, Om bheer kreeng saadhna, Om jeen kreeng saadhna."
Once you’ve finished repeating the mantra, it’s time to offer your offerings to the fire. Place your bowl of rice flour and other offerings in front of the fire and say a prayer. Next, take some ghee and pour it over the top of the offering, allowing it to catch fire.
Step 6: Conclude the Ritual
Once your offering has caught fire, you’ll want to conclude the ritual by chanting the following mantra three times:
"Om shantha santu teshoo mukhe, Om shantha santu teshoo mukhe, Om shantha santu teshoo mukhe."
This means "May peace be on your face" in Sanskrit. Take a deep breath and say this mantra three times, allowing the smoke from the fire to fill your space. Finally, open your eyes and thank the deities for the opportunity to perform the ritual.
